If you love writing as much as I do, you’ll probably agree that writing is not just a job–it’s something that you actually enjoy doing.

In fact, not only do I love writing, I love words and everything about them. That’s one reason why I enjoy the sites that I’m about to share in this post.

Have Some Fun with Words

Check out the following sites to have some fun with words:

  1. Writer’s Digest Writing Prompts–This is another site designed to stimulate your storytelling creativity. Choose from any one of the creative writing “assignments,” but try to keep your story under 750 words.
  2. Storybird–Did you ever want to write a picture book? If you’ve ever thought about it for even a moment, this site is for you. Use the gorgeous artwork on the site to illustrate your own story, or just read the stories that others have created.
  3. Free Rice–I know I’ve written about Free Rice before, but I just can’t help myself. This is probably my favorite online writing distraction and it has the added bonus of providing food for the hungry.

This post has been a little bit different from my usual posts here on WritingThoughts. It’s not writing advice (or even advice about the business of writing), but I hope that you enjoyed it. Use the comments to share your own favorite “fun” writing sites.

OMG – I am overly excited about this site: Etymologic. I actually wanted to get a college degree in this field at one point. Whenever someone asks me to define a word, I start boring them with ideas about its origins. My kids especially hated that! Anyway, thanks for the terrific list.

    Thanks Claire!

I’m glad that you enjoy site. (Or rather, I’m glad that I’m not the only one who likes it. 🙂 )

I like writing very much. But, i think i don’t have the courage to start it. I have thoughts in my mind that i need to put into words but, have no idea where to start from. Anyway, thanks a lot for sharing these valuable sites. Now i am going to visit them.

    Best Regards

    What a wonderful list, Laura.

I, too, love word origins and like to track how word usage changes over time. I find it interesting that some popular words fall out of favor over time or their meaning changes accordingly. My brain is working at 100 percent today to give you an example, but there are some.

I should try the Creative Copy Challenge too. It seems like “keyword usage on steroids” only in this case you have to mention 20 words at least once. Probably without keyword stuffing too!

    Ahmed Ali Hazara,

Thanks for your comment. I hope you find the courage that you need. In the meantime, enjoy these sites. 🙂

    Matt,

Thanks for your kind words. I never thought about the Creative Copy Challenge in terms of keywords, but now that you mention it… I hope you have fun there. 🙂

Writer’s Digest has published regular “writing assignment” prompts since it was an all-print, all-black-and-white-on-newsprint-paper magazine. I think it was early 1990-something when I got a couple of snippets published in its “Your Assignment” column. (One was a New Year’s resolution: “I will write every day–even though that ungrateful word processor never writes back!”)

Katherine–LOL! It sounds like you’ve got your work cut out for you in the coming year, then. Thanks for the history lesson on Writer’s Digest–I knew that they’d been publishing the prompts for a long time. I just didn’t know how long.

Free Rice is a really cool website – there is no doubt about it. I’d also recommend http://www.triond.com if you’re looking to make some quick money while writing.
