WAHM Wednesday: Will You Keep Working At Home?

September 19th, 2007 · 5 Comments

This is a question for the work-at-home moms out there who,  like me, opted to start a home business in order to find more time for their families.

Will you continue to work at  home after all of your kids are grown?

This is a question that I’ve thought about from time to time. It’s not like I have to decide right away, either. I have some years left to think about this.

There are some times when I think to myself:  absolutely, I’ve learned so much and now that I’ve got my business going I’m going to keep it going at home for as long as I can. I’ll not go back into corporate America if I can help it.

There are other times when I think to myself: man, I kind of miss having coworkers around. I miss not having to stress about getting clients or collecting payments. Maybe when the kids are grown I will just find a nice corporate job.

The truth is, right now, I just don’t know. It’s a good thing that I have some years to think it over.

Have you thought about this? Maybe you’ve been there and already made this decision. Leave a comment and share your thoughts.

Good question, Laura. I have often considered this, but now that I’m expecting again that decision seems so far off in the future. I think with me, it will just depend on my personal situation at that time because, like you, I often miss coworkers and the social side of external employment. I am a bit of a homebody, so I find it more difficult to get out and socialize the way I should. Being a hermit is not healthy either. So I guess it depends on how I feel when my children are older.

    Have a good evening!

I’m a huge homebody, so I would try to work from home no matter what 😀

It’s funny you bring this up. I have thought about it lately, only in the more near future, as in when Peanut begins school. The answer to both is probably NO. Unless it is really needed for me to go outside the house and I am not where I want to be in the next 4 years. I like being at home. I like having the freedom (Though it doesn’t seem like it now) to go to the school and drop in, have lunch with the kiddos or volunteer. Plus, I didn’t much like having to be confined to a lunch HOUR. What if I wasn’t done in Target huh?

I’m staying. I love working from home. I would like to teach a creative writing class at the Community College one day but I’m not in any hurry.

Aside: Nikki, I call my daughter Peanut, too.

    Hi All!

Lisa — I do sometimes miss the social aspects of the office. I suppose it will depend on my circumstances too. I can’t say for sure that I’d never go back, but I sure am enjoying my work-from-home life right now.

Angela — It’s good that you already know that answer to that question. For me, I guess I’m sitting more on the fence about what I’d be willing to do in the future.

Nikki — I like the freedom too. I’ll never shop on Saturday again!

Tammi — That’s a great idea — teaching at community college. Why didn’t I think of that? You can do that part-time and still mostly stay at home.
